WELL I guess it is time we update this thing. Life just got away on us. Summer was here things were happening left right and center, and even coming as up from behind. But things are going very well.

Liam and Zefram are walking/running/jumping/climbing and chatting all day long. Never seem to stop growing eating and pooping. They are now 17 months and making us laugh non stop.

Their first birthday was a hit. Lots of cupcakes and food to go around. They received lots of gifts and lots of love from family. We went camping this summer with both boys. Last summer Liam was till in NICU. I was a little nervous going camping with the boys since they are such busy body's and don't know the word 'sit'. But my dad had a great idea. A huge massive dinning tent and indoor out door carpet and you this...

A big ol playpen which made me OH SO VERY happy. We didn't go to the beach everyday way to busy. One baby went one way and the other went the other way. They didn't like the water too much. I think it was all the waves. Heck I would be too if I was that little. But all in all they were great babies and can't wait to go again next year.

Nothing really new other then camping was great. Matt has his new job and almost done 4 weeks of training. He's been working 3:30pm-11:30pm. Sometimes it's hard give both boys a bath all alone. But I got use to that in hurry. One would be sitting in the tub crying and cold while I dried the other one off. Poor things but when you only got one set of arms they got use to waiting.

Been trying to get the boys to nap in the afternoon instead of the AM. Cause once 5:30 rolls around they cranky pants kids and my patience have run out. Liam is still getting up through the night. OY he needs to stop that. Zefram soundly sleep through the night.

Liam had this sedated echo last month and everything is great there. Don't need to go back for another year. He's doing great and non stop running, yaking and making us laugh.

Holy Smokes

Man oh man a month has passed since I last updated. The boys are crawling like crazy now. Even showing signs of walking in the next month or 2. Crazy kids I have. They've been good lately. Eating lots, draining our bank account. Smiling laughing and "talking" (NO real words yet but that's ok, I'm not ready for them to start talking). So now they are 11 months old and have met every milestone and doing what they are suppose to be doing. Liam was lagging behind a little bi t because of his heart surgery, but he crawls around so much you would never have guessed he had open heart surgery almost 5 months ago. WOW 5 months already. I was warned that they would grow up fast and they have.

Their 1st Birthday is April 29. So maybe then I'll write about their birth and remember WHY I don't want more kids right now. It feels good that I don't have the baby fever right now and I'm really starting to enjoy these crazy kids. The boys really love the cat and chase after her. Calli gets so scared that she doesn't know where to go because she is bombarded with 2 crawling babies. They also really love Ruby. I have video of Zefram laughing at Ruby, but I'll have to post that another time since it's not here but at my parents'.

10 months

So our precious little babies are 10 months old today. I really don't know where the time has gone. It's been going so fast it's ridiculous. They are still practicing crawling forward. They've master the backwards crawling. But other then that nothing else is new. They have been pretty good babies this past week. Liam needs to learn to sleep through the night and not wake up 6,000 times. Thankful that Zefram sleeps through most of it. Well here is a 10 months pic of Liam and Zefram.

9.5 months

Again not much to talk about... oh wait are you kidding me?? The boys have been doing so many new things. Both are starting to crawl. Everyday they practice and everyday I shed a tear or in this case 2. Zefram has learned to shimmy across the carpet on his bum. Both rolling all over the place, sitting perfectly, with out many falls. Liam is starting to hold his own bottle. YEAH!! Now just Zefram and I'm hands free. Jibber jabbing LOTS. Especially Liam, he gets so loud at times, you have to leave the room or else you will pop an ear drum. He goes from high girly voice to a low man voice. Makes Matt and I laugh so hard. Zefram sounds like he is saying "dad" and "hi" but he's not. It's just crazy how fast they learn new things and how fast they are growing up. My mom warned me babies do grow up fast and they do. Look I'm her youngest 25 with 2 babies. CRAZY!!! But here are some new pics of the boys. Still cute as can be.

There really isn't anything exciting to post about here. Nothing going on. Boys are teething and very cranky. Liam can return to normal formula on Thursday. Which is very exciting for us and I'm sure for Liam too. That portagan is nasty stuff. But other then going a little mental myself (Matt to) life is pretty good. Now for the cute pics you are waiting for. HA can't blame you!

Who would have thought that 2007 would be the year will so much stress in our brand new little family. Not I. Nor did I think the twins would be in the NICU for 12 days or that Liam would be in NICU for 4 months let alone have heart condition. I've never been so stressed in one year. But now that's all in the past and 2008 is gonna be a great year for our little family. The only good thing about 07' was Liam and Zefram where born the rest wasn't so great. But God has taught me so much that I wouldn't trade it for anything.

Well before I sigh off and post THE most adorable picture of the twins. Just wanted to thank everyone who has prayed for us this past year, and all of your encouraging words. It's really great to know that so many ppl were praying for us and Liam. So thanks :0) Now for that picture you are all waiting for .....

Not Quite Ebola

Zefram's pediatrician diagnosed him with bronchitis, with a side order of eczema to boot. I would've guessed that he just had what Liam had, but his pediatrician was confident it was bronchitis (of course, Liam's diagnosis may have been inaccurate, so who knows). Apparently it has the potential to lead to asthma, so that sucks. So Z's on antibiotics and has a puffer chamber, which is a bit tricky.

Zef still hasn't had his RSV (Respiratory syncytial virus) shots, and apparently RSV is one possible cause of bronchitis (there are many), so I really hope it's not the culprit here.

Sick Swap

Alright, I better update this thing before a riot breaks out! ;) Liam's doing great as he seems to have kicked whatever needed kicking. He really is a different kid in that he complains a lot less and is much happier (which I'm sure I've said several times, but it occurs to me often). In about 2-3 more weeks, we'll be able to lift him under his arms, although we've done that a few times unintentionally and he hasn't batted an eye.

It's Zefram's turn however, as he's had what seems to be just a cold for the last few days. Hopefully he clears up in time for Christmas. He's got a doctor's appointment tomorrow because Mary's afraid he's got Ebola, and also because he's past due for his 6 month shots.

Liam has been a lot smilier today (yes, I realize that's not a real word). His throat doesn't seem to be as sore when he coughs, but he's still throwing up from coughing 3-4 times a day. It's nice having Liam a bit closer to being back to his usual self again; his relentless fussing and crying was starting to drive us a bit batty.

Liam was a bit happier today due to having lots of people over for Mary's birthday. But tonight he decided to play a few rounds of "cough until I throw up", which drew our attention to his laboured breathing. Mary was really concerned about it, and I ended up calling the on-call cardiologist at Sick Kids. After 5 or 6 minutes of talking, he said that he didn't think it was anything to worry about, but Mary wanted me to take Liam to the hospital just in case.

At the hospital, the doctor's only concern was Liam's cough, and he ordered the whole nine yards; x-ray, blood work, urine. A few hours later, he said that Liam's x-ray showed what might be the beginning of pneumonia. It wasn't certain, but better safe than sorry, so Liam will be on antibiotics for the next 10 days.

On the way home, Liam threw up in the car, but he was fine. And now, it is time to sleep.

Poor Lee Lee (and Us)

Liam's first 24 hours home have been really rough, as he has a cold that continues to worsen. He's been cranky and crying all day as it still hurts his chest to cough, and it's obvious that his throat is really sore (but cough medicine isn't a safe option, so it's just acetaminophen). Tonight after I fed him, he was coughing so much that he threw up on my shoulder, and was choking on his vomit briefly (I laid him sideways on the floor which thankfully worked, but Mary was a bit freaked out).

Since putting him to bed a few hours ago, he's been waking up every half hour or so crying, so I expect tonight to be another restless night for everyone (except Zef, who tends to sleep through it all).

Liam's tolerating his diet formula (Portagen), but he isn't fond of it... fortunately, he's drinking the minimum amount so far. The last thing we need is for him to get dehydrated; we'd just as well prefer to avoid another hospital visit for a while.

Another 5-7 days

Liam drained 14mls today from his JP drain which is already over and 24 hours isn't up. So looks like we are going on to phase 4 which is still portagen (a minimal fat diet, which he is already on) and a shot every 8 hours to help and stop the draining. So we could be here for only 2-3 days OR 7 more days. We are just praying that it is only going to be a few more days. I don't want to spend my 25th birthday in a hospital. Not that I do anything for my birthday anyways but still not in a hospital room. But being here is getting VERY annoying and both boys have been super cranky. Zefram who is normal a happy baby isn't so much anymore. I think he wants to go home like the rest of us. But that is all for now. Keep praying

How we long to be home

Just getting back from the hospital and spending sometime with Zefram, Matt is there with Liam till about 7-7:30. Liam only drained 7mls from his JP drain which is good new since yesterday it was 20 in a 24 hour period. Mind you he still has 8 hours till they drain it again but it's still a big improvement. Liam had a gassy not so happy day. But seemed really happy in the stroller and boy are my feet sore. The 7 hours that I was there, most of those were spent on my feet just to keep Liam happy. So I am glad to be sitting while Zefram is napping.

One of the funniest things about being at the hospital is how many "girlfriends" that Liam has. So many nurses will stop by our room just to say "hi" to Liam and off they go to there patient. So funny. Lot of the nurses are really great and you just want to take them home with you.

But we do long to go home and 3 weeks of hospital life is getting to us. It's expensive and tiring and draining and boring. There is only so much you can do with your child in his little hospital room. Can't take him down to the main floor since he has the JP draining tube in so it gets boring fast. If I only remembered to pack my Christmas cards, but I didn't I expect to be here this long. Hmm maybe I should take up knitting again or cross stitching. But Liam is doing great just waiting to go home and asking God for strength to carry on day in and day out.

Well we ask that you keep praying for Liam and that his draining will continue to decrease and we can all go home before my birthday on the 9th.

Getting Closer

Liam's drainage has continued to slowly go down, and the day before yesterday was pretty close to the goal. Yesterday however, it went back up a bit, but it's not too crazy to hope it might be down so that he can go home sometime this week. Today marks 3 weeks in Toronto; it would be nice to be home before we reach an entire month.

We continue to be unhappy with a few aspects of his care, unfortunately. He's been getting lots of nurses from different units, as they're constantly understaffed (and he's a relatively easy patient). That wouldn't be a problem, except these nurses seem to receive no briefing on the cardiac ward whatsoever... asking my wife where they're supposed to enter data, lifting Liam under his arms, etc. We're going to request that he no longer be cared for by nurses from other units until they're properly briefed on at least the basics of the ward (as several other parents have, equally unhappy with the situation).

Week 3 in Toronto

It's hard to believe that we've been in Toronto for 16 days now, especially after we were expecting to bring him home in just 7. Liam is now completely off IV, as his two most recent IV sites became inflamed. This is unfortunate, as the IV treatment he was receiving was fairly successfully bringing his drainage down. Now he is back to bottle feeds and is on a steroid, but he still isn't drinking much from the bottle (if I had to guess, it's because the special formula he's on isn't much to his liking). If he doesn't start drinking the required amount soon, he may have to get an NG tube put in (a feeding tube that goes through his nose and directly into his stomach), which he is sure to not particularly enjoy.

So please continue to pray for Liam. It's pretty humbling that so many people have been praying for Liam, so thank you for those who faithfully continue to do so. The waiting game continues...

Another day

I was a bit worried that Liam might get ahold of his IV tubing and rip it out last night, a concern that I shared with his nurse yesterday. She told me it was pretty secure, and much to my surprise, he got through the night without ripping it out.

But he changed his mind this morning, and sure enough, he ripped it out. Luckily, Mary was there with a few minutes later, and found him crying and bleeding. So yeah, we're both pretty damned pissed off about that, and we let them know it. If he manages to rip it out again, I'll seriously consider having him transfered to another hospital. This is actually the second IV he's ripped out... a few hours after his heart surgery, when I thought he was supposed to be sedated, he ripped out his leg IV and his breathing tube (it was again fortunate that I was there, as none of the nurses in the room noticed, and I had to run over to one to get their attention).

To be honest, we've both been really disappointed with much of Liam's care at Sick Kids. Some of the nurses have bordered on being negligent, and we've had to complain several times; I'm sure we'll have to complain several more. I was expecting a lot more from such a highly-esteemed hospital. Some of the nurses have been outstanding, but it's clear that the shortage of nurses is having a serious effect on the care provided in Ontario. It's nice to not have to pay for medical care in Canada, but it's a shame that the care is sometimes complete shit.

Anyways, so Liam has a new IV in him and is doing fairly well all things considered. We don't have any new pictures, as he looks pretty much the same from the most recent pictures, except that his wound continues to heal nicely. Grandma and Grandpa Gerryts are coming to visit tomorrow, so the four of us are looking forward to that.

Still in Toronto

Whoops, haven't updated in quite a few days. Liam is doing well, but remains at Sick Kids due to his excessive drainage. The 5-day diet didn't bring down the drainage sufficiently (it actually went up yesterday), so today they put him on an IV (which he thoroughly enjoyed receiving). Apparently, the IV won't satisfy his hunger, so the next few days could be a pain. Hopefully it will do the trick and we can have him home by next weekend.

We were told by another mom that he will most likely have to remain on his special pre-IV diet formula for 6 weeks after we bring him home. The really bad news? It costs $28 per can. Yeah. So we'll see what happens with that.

For those curious about why he's still in the hospital, something in his lymphatic system was "knicked", which isn't all that uncommon. It causes his body to have a difficult time digesting fats, so the idea is to keep fats out of his body and allow the lymphatic system to relax and heal. So the heart surgery part of his recovery is going great; it's the accidental collateral damage that's keeping him in the hospital at the moment.

No new pics at the moment unfortunately, but hopefully by the weekend. His scar is looking surprisingly good.

5 Days Down...

It's hard to believe that we've been in Toronto for nearly a week. Today Liam gave lots of smiles and was much more himself, cooing and flailing about (sometimes causing him to stop and cry for a few seconds, after which he would immediately resume flailing and cooing). But on the flip side, because Liam is draining more fluid than his doctors would like to see, he may have to stay as many as 5 more days, or even longer. While the issue doesn't sound overly serious, it's a disappointing setback, as we were hoping and expecting to come home any day.

Day 4 After Surgery

Matt here, doing an entry for the first time in a long while. Liam seemed to be a bit more himself today, giving a few little smirks here and there. He finally got to see Zefram today for the first time since Tuesday, and smiled at him right away. I believe the only "hook-up" Liam still has is one of the drainage tubes, so it's cool to see him without the huge number of wires and tubes from 4 days ago. Once he's draining a certain minimum amount of fluid, he will be ready to come home. His incision looks better, but it's clear he's still in a fair bit of pain.

As a bonus, Liam also had visits from Auntie Lar and Grandma and Grandpa Gerryts today, so he had lots of love. We're anxious and nervous to have him home, but we're both obviously very happy that he's recovering so well.

Day 3 after surgery

We received some surprising news today, which is that Liam may be able to come home as early as this weekend, because he's recovering so well. This isn't guaranteed however; it's possible he won't be home until next week.

Liam had another great night last night, but when I went to see him this morning, he was cranky and irritable. Mainly because the draining tubes are uncomfortable and he was hungry but couldn't eat because he was going for a heart echo. So after I had calmed him down and he was given his meds he was feeling pretty good; so good that I got 3 smiles out of him and he was just staring at me for 5 mins it made me cry. Out of sheer joy because he looks like my little lee lee again with a zipper down the front of his chest. But speaking of his heart echo, they're slightly concerned about two things they saw that Liam's pediatric cardiologist in Hamilton will have to keep an eye on. Something to do with a narrowing in the pulmonary valve and back flow from a valve. It's possible but uncertain that either problem could require another surgery somewhere down the road. So we ask that you continue to pray for Liam and his heart and his cardiologist in Hamilton. But before all that His nurse and I wheeled him down in his crib to where he had his heart echo, and he was very happy and content, looking at me and the nice sun shinning through the 4th floor. We went over a few bumps and he didn't like that so much, and he tried yawning and I could see that it hurt him, but he's a trooper.

They took out the central IV line in his neck. He does have a rash from the tape and pretty bad one but the air will dry that out, and he still has one draining tube in him which is still draining quite a bit of fluid. I asked his nurse if they were concerned about it and she the Dr's aren't, since it is still a good color and it's good that it is draining. So pray that, it clears up soon so he can return home. But it is all God's timing and his timing is PERFECT. But here are some pics of Liam 3 days after his surgery.

48+ hours later

We cannot believe how great Liam is doing. It went from being in the CCU to not even 24 hours later to the 4th floor and now 48 hours later he is going to his own room. He is doing so well it's almost kind of scary. I spent most of the afternoon with Liam today and feed him his bottles and tried to burp him and hold him but he cried from so much pain and being uncomfortable that I got scared and nervous. So we just put him back in his bed and I fed him his bottle there and the nurse burped him but i have to leave the room b/c his cry breaks my heart. I've seen him cry to many time b/c of pain that I cannot handle that right now. I feel so bad for my little lee lee. I really miss him being awake and alert and himself. I keep praying for strength and it's granted everyday. But Liam is doing very well and I am so very thankful for that. So now that he gets his own room we can bring Zefram in and we can have as many ppl as we want as long as we aren't too loud and don't get in the way of the nurse that needs to come in and give him his med's and so forth and such. But we still need your prayers and support Liam still has quit a few more days of recovery and we need to get use to him again and learn him all over again. But here are some pics of Liam today. Liam is doing really well and he is getting moved from the CCU (critical care unit) to 4D so he's moving up which is a great thing, just means he's getting better. He is off the morphine and just on codeine which is another positive thing. It's just one awesome thing after another. Keep praying though he still needs your prayers as he recovers. Matt and I and of couse Zefram just came from visiting Liam in the CCU and he's doing really well. He Sats are 99-100 and he's doing so well that they already took out his beathing tube only 7 hours after his surgery. Well actually he decided to do that himself. He disconnected it so the nurse called the Dr and they removed it. He now has a little box over his head with some oxygen. I'm so thankful that God gave us Liam, he's out little fighter he's doing amazing. I wouldn't be surpised if he came home after a week. He's doing so well already. But we ask that you continue to pray as he recovers and for us and Zefram. Anywho from now on I will just update at the end of the day with one blog instead of 3...like today. HA! Well best be going back to the room since Zefram needs to eat soon and have a bath and I think we both really ready for bed too!

Happy that Liam's old ticker is fixed and he's good as new. I thank the Lord for all the strength that He's given us/me during this time.

Well Liam is out of the O.R. after a 4 hour surgery and the surgery went really well and now is in the CCU recovering. I cannot thank Matt, my family that came here today and GOD who got us through it all. HE is an AMAZING GOD. I cannot believe the stregnth that He gave me today to pull through. Thanks for everyone that prayed and we ask you keep praying that he recovers and come home soon.

Ronald McDonald House

As Liam's surgery is getting closer we were trying to found out where to stay. We tried the Ronald McDonald house but we knew the chances of getting in there were slim. We knew there were hotels around the area where we could stay at but are VERY expensive and in no way could we afford to stay at a hotel even with the Sick Kids discount. My parents offered to help which is really great and nice of them but we didn't want them paying for our 2 week. But we prayed about and Matt called today and we got into the Ronald McDonald house in T.O. It's a 5 mins walking distance from Sick Kids. We have to be there at 4pm for a tour and an 'interview'. Pray that all goes well on the drive up and we aren't nervous but stay calm and remember to pray and breathe (the breathing part it for me)

Liam and His Pre-Op Day

So we spent Sunday night at my parents' house so my mom could watch Zefram for the day and we could just concentrate on Liam while being at Sick Kids. We left at 5:15 am and despite some traffic and getting a little bit lost (stupid google maps) we arrived on time for Liam's first appointment at the blood clinic at 7:30 am, then we headed off to get an x-ray done and then went for an ECG. After that we did some waiting around for anesthesiology and Liam's surgeon. A nurse came to talk to us about what will be going on the day of his surgery and afterwards, and what time to be at the OR. It was a lot of information but glad Matt was there.

I finally feel ready for his surgery to be done. There is less then a 5% chance of Liam dying during surgery, which is my biggest fear. There are also other possible complications like a stroke and blood clots but at least we know what those risks are and if they do happen to Liam we are prepared. I think the more you know about it and research and talk about it the more prepared you are... well the most you can be prepared in this situation. But I feel at peace with it and I'm just at the point that I just want it done and over with. But after that long day and we were done at 2:30pm and home by I think at least 4:30. Liam slept the whole way home. It was a much needed nap since his were being interrupted throughout that day. Liam is up to 12lbs 14oz and 24 inches tall, or short how ever you look at it.

No pictures of the trip to Sick Kids; it was just one more thing to remember. Now Liam is doing well and his two bottom teeth are finally through. YEAH!!! :0)

Liam's Pre-Op

Monday, Nov 5, 2007 Matt and I will be heading to sick kids for Liam's pre-op. Going to be a long day but a long day that will bring much comfort. Liam will go for blood work and x-ray and we will meet with the surgeon and nurses. So pray for us as it's going to be a very busy day and Liam's been really cranky and teething. There isn't really much to update about. The boys are doing well and growing like weeds. They were teething for a long while and we are almost bald but now they are back to normal, which is great b/c we are moving on Saturday. Liam's has a regular appointment tomorrow with the cardiologist. And that's about it. But what you are really here for are the pictures right? Well here ya go.

Surgery

Some of you may have heard but some not. We got a call from Sick Kids in T.O. that Liam's date for his heart surgery is November 13. It's a relief knowing that we finally have a date for his surgery, but it also makes it real that it's gonna happen and I can't imagine seeing little Liam being operated on. It just makes it all too real and scary. We will be in T.O. hopefully at the Ronald McDonald house for 2 weeks while Liam recovers. Then if all goes well he can come home. Our biggest fear is actually losing Liam during the surgery. I don't think it's a silly fear either; it's a realistic fear that all mothers/families go through while someone is being operated on. We just have to keep praying that whatever God hands us in life is what God hands us. And this reminds me of learning to lean on God and depend on him. Which I can assume is hard for most people.

Other then that the boys are getting bigger. 5 months old now, starting to roll over and being super silly boys. They make Matt and I laugh all day long. It times like these that makes me happy we have kids. Well for the enjoyment of the audience reading this, here are some pictures of the boys.

I guess it's been a while since we've posted anything on here. Well that's the life of parents with twins. Before you know it the day is over and it's almost been 4 weeks since Liam's been home and it seems like he's always been home. Nothing new to report just that the boys are growing like weeds and giggling so much. Sleeping through the night. In bed around 10:30 and up again anytime between 4:30-6:30am. Zefram has slept till 7:30am twice, both on Saturday even. Liam is usually the first one awake sometimes at 4:30 or 5:00am. So happy they sleep well at night since the longest they sleep during the day is a 30 min nap here and there. Other then that it's going well. Here some pictures for your enjoyment.

Gotta saying having both boys home is pretty great. Really busy but so much fun. Liam is doing great at home. He's been cranky these past few days but I guess leaving his "home" (the NICU) and coming here might make someone cranky. But Zefram's been happy as a clam and giggling lots. Liam loves to ham it up to with stories and smilies. The last couple of days they both discovered their feet and today Zefram's been trying to sit up straight while sitting in his vibrating chair. So we survived the first night. Both boys woke up at the same time. Gave them both a bath and ate and off to sleepy land they went. Today went very well and Zefram's been very happy since Liam came home and he's been giggling lots and it's so cute. Liam's been gassy and cranky but we will fix that in a hurry. On Saturday, my brother Andy, sister Meg, and grandma came down to visit us and Zefram. It was our first get-together in 2 years, and Zef was happy to meet his great-grandma and see everyone again.

Camping and Liam Update

Mary, Zefram and I went camping with the in-laws a few weekends back. Zefram did fairly well... not too fussy, and he seemed to enjoy the outdoors just fine. It'll be fun to have both boys camping next year.

I had a meeting with Liam's doctor today to discuss his current status. This time, it actually sounds pretty likely (to me) that Liam will be home before the end of the month. Mary's skeptical, and I can't blame her, but he's been doing better lately. He won't require the expensive machine we were facing having to buy/rent, but will come home with oxygen, just in case he needs it.

3 months...WHAT?

I know it' been a while since we've updated. But it's summer and who wants to sit in front of a computer and write about something? Well apparently I do. There really isn't anything new with Liam at the moment. They have been giving him some air, not oxygen just slight air bubbles while he sleeps to help with his 02 sats dropping. So they are trying that over the long weekend and sometime this coming week we will meet with a Dr and figure out what's next with Liam. So if that works then he gets to come home and we aren't counting on it and if it doesn't then he gets moved to the 3rd floor of the hospital to the pediatrics ward where we will probably stay till his surgery. But Liam still cute as can be and apparently the nurses all love him and want to take him home AND they've been saying he looks like me. So it's no wonder they want to take him home ;0) He smiles and coo's all the time and eats like a champ. He's up to 9lbs 10oz (probably little more now) Now on to twin b, Zefram. He is probably over 11lbs now and eating and growing out of everything. He's been a good baby lately. Still fusses alot but not as much which is really nice. He is also smiling lots cooing and even starting to giggle. Which Matt and I love. The cooing and the "talking" is so sweet he breaks my heart. He sleeps better at night then during the day which is fine by me. So I don't get much done during the day as i would like to but thank goodness for my mommy. Hmmm? I was gonna post some pics of the boys but it's not working and Matty is at work. Well that's all the news we have right now. I enjoy being a mom but I don't enjoy the lack of sleep and lack of house work not getting done. But at least I have 2 beautiful boys.

Liam's back at McMaster, and we're waiting to hear how things went at Sick Kids. He had his heart echo and was studied for a sleeping disorder, so he won't have to go back at the end of the month. Mary visited yesterday with her mom and sister, and we're both going today, which I'm looking forward to because I haven't seen Liam in about a week.

My kids sure are beautiful. I'm sure most parents think that, but mine totally win. ;)

I just got home from work and Mary's sleeping, but there's a note saying Liam's going to Sick Kids in Toronto bright and early tomorrow for 1 or 2 nights, most likely to be studied in regards to his tet spells. Woohoo! Here's hoping they unravel the mystery keeping him away from home.

By the way, for those not familiar with Liam's condition, there's a little area on the side panel to the right which briefly explains it.

Liam's doctor is attempting to have him admitted to the cardiac ward at Sick Kids in Toronto, in order for Liam to undergo a sleep study (his tet spells occur when he is in a deep sleep). Sick Kids has no respiratory beds available, but he may be able to get a cardiac bed due to having a heart echo scheduled at Sick Kids at the end of the month. While it would suck that Liam would be even further away, it may provide the answers we need to treat him and bring him home safely.

If Liam does come home requiring a monitor, we got the wonderful news today that such a monitor is not covered by the government. The price tag? $2,400. That's approximately $2,400 more than we have available. It's possible that he won't require a monitor (particularly if the sleep study gets a green light), and there's a slim chance that we may tap into funding to reduce the cost. If all else fails, it looks as though our extended family, once again, will help us take care of such a hefty financial burden.

We learned an interesting factoid today as well: Liam's nearly 11 weeks spent in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit thus far would have a bill of around $150,000 if we weren't Canadian citizens. I'm feeling thankful we are. The cost to us: $0. Imagine if we lived south of the border (especially having seen Sicko). We'd be looking at bankruptcy or Zefram being an only child.

Liam's doing well otherwise. He's at 8 lbs 7 oz and eating like a champ. Nothing new with Zef... it still floors me every time he smiles (which he does often).

While visiting Liam yesterday in the NICU we got the most amazing news. Out little Lee Lee gets to come home on Thursday. He hasn't had any tet spells for 6 days and when his O2 sats go down to the 60's he slowly bring his sats back up on his own with out the help of oxygen. So from Wednesday to Thursday Matt and I will be bunking in the care-by-parent room at the hospital in preparation for Liam to come home. He will do his car seat test (let's hope he passes that) and then on Thursday we will take him home. Then on July 30th Liam has his heart echo at Sick Kids in T.O., and then from there we will find out when he will have his heart surgery. So once that is all done and his heart is fixed we can put this all behind us and get on with our lives. But for now we are so happy that Liam is coming home and we just want to thank everyone for all your prayers and support. It's nice to know that there were so many people praying for Liam and our little family. God is good.

The boys will be 10 weeks tomorrow and it's crazy how fast they are growing up. Zefram isn't as cranky as he use to be but still more cranker then Liam and they are both smiling lots for daddy not mommy. (apparently I don't count) Liam is still in the NICU as they continue to figure out why his o2 sats continue to drop when he falls into a deep sleep. It's frustrating cause all we want is Liam to come home. Liam is up to 8lbs 2 oz and Zefram is close to 11lbs. So here are some new and beautiful pics of Liam.

8½ Weeks

It's hard to believe that the boys are almost 2 months old. Glad it's moving along fast though! ;)

Liam's lung test came back negative... they're not the problem. His doctor's current theory is that it has to do with an immature brain, which I assume he got from his mom (ha!). We could be bunking with him in preparation for his release as early as Sunday, but that's assuming that he has no spells until that time. In other news, he's eating like a champ and seems to be growing nicely.

Today the boys visited with each other again, but this time it was Zefram who slept through it. Zefram is doing fine; he's a bit less fussy than he's been the last few weeks. And now, for your viewing pleasure...

7 Weeks

The boys are 7 weeks old today. I haven't updated in a while (sorry!), so I'll try and remember all the updates.

Liam may be coming home in 1-2 weeks. We've heard that before, but Liam's doctor has figured out that his spells, where his blood oxygen drops dangerously low, seem to not be related to his heart. Most likely, the problem is sleep apnea or a similar disorder. This is actually good news, as it means his heart isn't causing these spells; in fact, Liam's heart rate is excellent despite his Tetralogy of Fallot.

This past week, Liam and Zefram got to meet for the first time in about a month. Liam slept right through it, and Zef was too busy fussing to care, but it was still pretty cool. Liam has been awake for our last few visits, and so we've been able to see his eyes, again for the first time in about a month (he's always sleeping when we visit, and we don't want to wake him).

I just called the NICU, and Liam's weight is up to 7 lbs! I did a rough weighing of Zefram today, and he's around 10 lbs. Woohoo!

Zefram's still quite fussy, but things could definitely be worse. He's smiling more often, which is an incredible thrill. I'll upload a video of him shortly (and by shortly, I mean before his third birthday).

I went to go visit Liam today (this is Mary) with Zefram my mom and sister Marlene. He's doing well, but he had a really bad tet spell just before I came in which meant he need some oxygen and he couldn't be moved from the area where he is, which meant Zefram and Liam couldn't have "chit chat" time. It made me really sad since they haven't seen each other in 3.5 weeks, if not longer. So next time I'll just have to call a head of time to make sure Liam and Zefram can have some time together. 5+ Weeks

Yeah, so it's taken a lot longer to get an update in than I expected.

Liam's almost up to 6 lbs now; Zefram nearly 8 lbs. Liam is doing better little-by-little, and he's tolerating full feeds now; the bowel issue seems to be gone. We had a meeting with his doctors last week, and while they can't give us a date for when Liam can come home, they said he's making progress. The current goal is for his weight to increase as fast as it ought to, as weight is an important factor relating to when he can have surgery, and how risky it will be.

Zefram's being a bit of a handful lately, as he's been colicky for the past few days... very restless and cries seemingly at random. Hopefully we'll have more pictures of Liam soon, but for now, here's some of Zefram.

4 Weeks!

Wow, it's hard to believe the boys were born 4 weeks ago today. Time's already flying by.

We have more pics of Zefram since he's come home that I'll be posting shortly. Liam's got some catching up to do once he comes home.

We're hoping to have a meeting with Liam's doctor tomorrow to discuss his current status and what's next. The latest news is that he has resumed bottle feedings, and his feeds are being regularly increased while he becomes re-accustomed to it. There isn't really any news regarding his heart condition; he's still requiring oxygen to be administered on a regular basis. New news will hopefully be forthcoming also...

Day Twenty

Liam's out of his isolette again and seems to be doing well enough. Mary got to hold him today (after not really being able to for more than a week), and he looked and sounded a lot like Zefram... I'll be surprised if they turn out to be fraternal twins. Also, his weight is now up to (almost) 5 lbs.

Zefram had a doctor appointment a few days ago, and had a clean bill of health. He's up to 6 lbs, 11 oz now!

Update on Liam

Last week, we found that Liam's heart condition was more serious than was previously known. He's currently still at McMaster's Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, and while we thought he might be coming home today, we've since learned he'll be staying for at least another week; possibly more.

Liam has a cogenital heart defect called Tetralogy of Fallot. As a result, he has to be kept calm at all times, or he risks not getting enough oxygen to his lungs. He will require surgery between 3 and 6 months of age in an attempt to do a total repair of his heart. If he has serious complications before then, he may have minor surgery as a temporary fix, followed by the major surgery once he turns one year old.

We visited Liam today, and were told that he has another problem with his bowels. They're not 100% sure of the exact diagnosis, but they're treating it somewhat preemptively as a precaution. It's not as serious as his heart problem, and should hopefully be cleared up within the next week.

Zefram continues to do well at home, although he sure likes to keep us busy at night. He visited much of the Gerryts clan this past weekend, and grandma has been great in helping us out with him while we visit Liam in the hospital. Thanks grandma! :)

One Down, One to Go

Zefram came home today, and is doing very well. Unfortunately, Liam is having some problems, possibly due to his heart. We were finally able to speak to a doctor about his condition, which at this point is believed to be relatively mild. However, Liam was transfered back to McMaster today for further investigation, and it isn't known how long he will be there for.

Zefram is enjoying his new digs, although he has spent most of his time here sleeping so far. It's true that all that babies do is sleep, poop, and eat, but thankfully most of the time is spent on the sleeping. :) It's nice to have one of the boys home, but we'll feel much better when all of the back-and-forth between home and the hospital(s) is over.

The boys continue to increase their food intake, and they're pooping quite a bit. Mary was fortunate enough to get peed on by Zefram today. Liam's weight is up slightly to 4 lbs, 12 oz, and Zefram is back up to his weight from a few days ago, 5 lbs, 12 oz. Grandma and Grandpa stopped by, as did Chris (who helped feed Zefram). [I've decided now that I'm going to have the boys' names tattooed on their foreheads; until then, I may refer to both of the boys as Lifram. -Matt]

Today was the boys' 7th day of freedom from their amniotic prison! They continue to hit milestones every day; today they were moved to a less-critical area of the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. We were told that their "next" step was to pass the car seat test (to ensure they can breathe fine in a car seat for 90 minutes straight), but there are other milestones that must still be met (growing by a certain amount each day being a big one). Hopefully tomorrow we'll think to get an update on their weights. Below the 3 pictures are 2 videos of each of the boys "grunting"... they do this fairly often when they're relaxing.

Day Six

We got a bit more into "regular" things today; we changed diapers and fed and bathed the boys. It's nice that we've gone from looking at them behind plexiglass with tubes in their noses to being able to pick them up out of their cots and feed and walk around and sit with them in less than a week. It's hard to believe they'll need another 2-or-so weeks before they can come home, but we'll see what happens. Apparently the boys are being a bit deceptive, as we don't hear them cry very often when we visit (unless they're being bathed), but I guess the night nurses have their hands full as the boys like to get rowdy once the sun goes down. Today the boys were moved from their isolettes into cots, because they're keeping their own temperature. We talked to the nurse about what needed to happen before the boys could come home, and she estimated it would be about another 2 weeks, assuming things keep going the way they have been. Liam will need another heart echo in 4 weeks, and we're still waiting to speak to someone in detail about his current condition. We watched Liam have a bath today (he's not a huge fan), and Mary changed Zefram's diaper. As you can see, they're wearing clothes now. :)

Day Four

The boys turned 3-days-old today. Liam is now also off his IV, as tests for something-or-other came back negative, eliminating the need for antibiotics. We had both of the boys out and in our arms for quite a while today; at least an hour in total. They're continuing to do great and are growing nicely; Liam is now up to 4 lbs, 11 oz (up 6 oz from birth), and Zefram up slightly to 5 lbs, 11 oz (up 1 oz). Tomorrow I would like to get a clear idea of when the twins will be able to come home, and what that will be contingent upon. Both are a bit jaundiced, but they're breathing, feeding, and growing well.

Day Three

We found out today that Mary was approved to go home, only 48 hours after giving birth. We had previously been told she would be there for 3-5 days, so that came as a surprise. Even more surprising was that we were told that the twins were ready to be moved as well. Zefram is now off his IV, and both twins are eating (well, digesting) their food without problems. We're still waiting to talk with the cardiologist, but the boys' doctor told us that the echo pretty much confirmed what the previous ultrasound indicated; that he has a small hole in his heart. Hopefully we'll get ahold of the cardiologist tomorrow, but so far Liam is doing great, so you wouldn't think anything was amiss. The twins are now at St. Joseph's in Hamilton, and we're still not exactly sure when they'll be coming home.

Day Two

Today, Mary and the boys are all feeling much better. Liam and Zefram are off their respirators and breathing fine on their own, and Mary was walking around a bit and got to go down and see them. We were both thrilled to actually get to hold them when we visited them in the morning. Both boys managed to open their eyes for us... that was very cool (no pictures of this unfortunately). Liam has an echo for his heart coming up, hopefully tomorrow (technically today, May 1st), as there was some concern from a while back that he may have a small hole in it. The pediatric cardiologist said that if there is a small hole, it will likely fix itself. Liam seems to be doing just fine, so we're not too worried, but we'll have more info shortly.

I'm happy to announce the arrival of Liam Matthew Henry and Zefram Carson Jacob, born earlier today. Liam arrived at 1:01 pm weighing in at 4 lbs 5 oz, and Zefram arrived at 3:25 pm weighing in at 5 lbs 10 oz. Bit of a long story as to why Zefram was born so far after Liam, but there were no serious complications. However, both Liam and Zefram are in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at McMaster, where it's possible they will remain for several more weeks, potentially until June. We'll hopefully know more tomorrow, but early prospects for both boys are very positive. Mary was a trooper and is doing well also, but she will remain at McMaster for several more days while she recuperates.

Mary and I would like to thank everyone for their congratulations and prayers, and appreciate continued prayer.
